Carole creates vibrantly colored textile and beaded jewelry from fiber and monofilament threads and small, delicate glass beads. All work is done by hand, bead by bead and thread to thread. Carole's love for the handmade comes from working with her mother, Alyce Hiyama, a talented tailor and costumer. She has perfected her skills through study, teaching, and continued practice. She has returned to this first love, after successful careers with Northwest companies and organizations.

Tell us how your work is made.


What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I became more passionate about my work when I found that I could use very old and traditional craft methods such as Kumihimo, a 16th century Japanese braiding process, in new and unusual ways. This exploration has allowed me to incorporate modern colors and materials to craft a piece of wearable art that meets today's contemporary style.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My love for handmade objects, beads, paper and textiles, and my ability to use unlikely materials in very unique ways.
