My jewelry is the result of my desire to incorporate color into my work without using stones. The color was to be from an alternative source. Through trial, error and consideration of many materials I concluded that WOOL FELT was perfect. The material is durable, pliable, possesses a rich, saturated color and a hint of texture. I manipulate felt into shapes and set them like stones into my oxidized sterling and 18k Bi-metal jewelry. This is a technique that I developed on my own to suit my needs.

Tell us how your work is made.

I employ traditional metalsmithing techniques in my work. The final steps are oxidizing my pieces and then essentially setting the pieces with wool felt as if it is a stone. This is something I came up with to serve my desire to work with an alternative color source in my work and is not a traditional felting or fiber technique.


What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Using wool felt as my source for color has proven to be both surprising and brain teaser. It is unexpected.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I utilize an alternative material in my jewelry. Often people do not initially see and/or comprehend that the color seen in my jewelry is wool felt. That the color is wool felt is serendipitous as I was initially looking to incorporate color, pattern and texture into my work. I knew in my mind's eye that I had wanted to work with saturated color and a hint of texture. When I saw some wool felt, the light bulb turned on.
